Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard lays very near to the boundary in between Beds and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of about 37,000 and a heritage harping back to Roman times, at which time the Roman built Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is connected to the adjacent town of Linslade and it's about halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it is found very close to the Chilterns and has a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's believed that there had been settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, historical artefacts and coins uncovered in close proximity give proof of this. The age-old Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, came through the close by towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe over 2,000 years back, and the Romans should have at the very least been aware of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was Saxons who created the market place in around the tenth century, and antiquities picked up suggest that they were inhabiting the neighbourhood most probably since the 6th Century. The commune as such was not described until 906 at which time the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book identified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, incorporated a significantly bigger area than just the town by itself, and covered the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element did not get added on till the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from another "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to a number of tenants over the ages, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even larger throughout the succeeding decades and the construction of a canal and a railway line during the 19th Century saw it develop and evolve. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a prosperous market town that has witnessed accelerated development in the past few years.
