Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds in the East of England, the small town of Leighton Buzzard stands near the boundary between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of around 37,000 and a heritage harping back to Roman days, when the historical Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is linked to the adjacent town of Linslade and it is about mid-way between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton (Bedfordshire), it is placed near the Chilterns and boasts a vital quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's thought that there were settlements in and near to what is now called Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, historical artifacts and coins stumbled upon in the area give evidence of this. The ancient Watling Street (made by the Romans), now termed the A5, went through the close by areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable roughly 2,000 in years past, and the Romans will have at least known of the village at this time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who used the market place during the tenth century, and artifacts unearthed suggest that they were inhabiting the neighbourhood quite likely since the 6th Century. The village existing at that time was not observed until 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 recognised Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, embodied a much bigger area than only the town alone, and comprised the settlements of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion was not to be applied till the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to numerous tenants through the centuries, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on expanding through the ensuing decades and the development of a railway and a canal in the 19th Century saw it develop and grow. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard is a flourishing market town that has seen improved development in the past several years.
