Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard stands near the county boundary between Bedfordshire and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a population close to 37,000 and a historic past going back to Roman days, when the Roman built Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is pretty much connected to the nearby town of Linslade and is roughly halfway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it lies close to the Chilterns and boasts a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is believed that there had been settlements in and close to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, age-old relics and coinage discovered in close proximity offer proof of this. The historical Watling Street (built by the Romans), now termed the A5, came through the nearby areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable some 2,000 years ago, and the Romans should have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Romans were thereafter followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who used the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and artifacts stumbled upon suggest that they were staying in the local area undoubtedly from the 6th Century. The settlement existing at that time is not remarked upon till 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book documented Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, comprised a substantially wider area than merely the town by itself, and included the hamlets of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not applied up until the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from another "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to a great many tenants through the generations, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even larger through the following generations and the construction of a canal and a railway service in the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and develop. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard can be described as a blooming market town that has witnessed greater development in recent times.
