Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds, the small town of Leighton Buzzard lies close to the boundary in between Bucks and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a story harping back to Roman days, when the historical A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is linked to the adjacent town of Linslade and it's approximately mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it is found very close to the Chiltern Hills and boasts an important quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It is thought that there existed settlements in and near to what's now named Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, age-old artifacts and coinage discovered in the area give proof of this. The age-old Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now termed the A5, went through close by Hockliffe and Dunstable approximately two thousand years back, and the Romans would have at the very least known of the village during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was them who set up a market during the 10th Century, and artefacts discovered mean that they were dwelling in the local area most likely from the sixth century. The settlement as it was wasn't cited until 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book recognized Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, comprised a considerably greater area than simply the town by itself, and contained the settlements of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section wasn't appended before the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to various tenants over the eras, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on expanding during the succeeding decades and the building of a railway line and a canal in the 19th Century saw the town develop and expand. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard is a booming market town that has seen greater development in the past several years.
