Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard lays very close to the border between Beds and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of about 37,000 and a historical past harping back to Roman times, when the early A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is connected to the adjacent town of Linslade and it's about midway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton, it is placed very close to the Chiltern Hills and has an important quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's felt that there had been settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, ancient relics and coins picked up in the area offer evidence of this fact. The historic Watling Street (built by the Romans), now termed the A5, came through neighbouring Hockliffe and Dunstable about two thousand years back, and the Romans would have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was them who set up a market during the tenth century, and relics stumbled upon suggest that they were settling the vicinity in all likelihood from the sixth century. The commune as it was is not listed till 906 after the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) recognised Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, embraced a lot wider area than only the town by itself, and comprised the settlements of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the name could have come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not to be put on until the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to various tenants through the generations, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow over the following generations and the construction of a railway line and a canal during the 19th Century saw it expand and develop. Current day Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a growing market town that has witnessed improved development in recent years.
