Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard stands right on the boundary between Bucks and Bedfordshire, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of around thirty seven thousand and a story harping back to Roman times, at which time the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjacent town of Linslade and is approximately midway between Luton (Beds) and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it is located close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has an important quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is considered that there existed settlements in and close to what's now called Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, early artefacts and coins found in the area offer evidence of this. The historical Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now termed the A5, came through close by Dunstable and Hockliffe around about 2,000 years back, and the Romans should have at least known of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who introduced the market place in around the 10th Century, and artifacts stumbled upon suggest that they were staying in the area possibly from the 6th Century. The settlement as it was then is not reported till 906 at which time the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) specified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, covered a much wider area than just the town itself, and consisted of the settlements of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element did not get put in before the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to a variety of tenants through the centuries, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).
