Review of Leighton Buzzard:
Leighton Buzzard Information:
Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.
Population: 37,000
Found in the county of Beds, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard lays near to the border in between Beds and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of around thirty seven thousand and a story going back to the days of the Romans, when the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is connected to the adjacent town of Linslade and is about halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it lies close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts a substantial quarrying industry (sand).
Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is felt that there had been settlements in and close to what is now called Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, ancient artifacts and coinage discovered in close proximity show proof of this. The historic Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, ran through the nearby areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable some 2,000 years back, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.
The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was they who used a market sometime in the 10th Century, and artefacts uncovered suggest that they were residing in the area perhaps from the sixth century. The settlement as such wasn't listed till 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book recognized Leighton Manor.
The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, comprised a substantially greater area than just the town alone, and incorporated the hamlets of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name seems to been taken from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component was not to be put in before the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to an assortment of tenants through the centuries, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).
Leighton Buzzard continued to grow through the succeeding generations and the coming of a railway line and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and expand. Current day Leighton Buzzard is a bustling market town that has witnessed improved development in recent times.
