Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Facts for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Beds, the small town of Leighton Buzzard lays very close to the border in between Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a past harping back to the Roman era, at which time the historic Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is connected to the adjacent town of Linslade and it's about midway between Luton (Bedfordshire) and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it lies very close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a significant quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is believed that there existed settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, early artefacts and coinage found nearby offer evidence of this. The ancient Watling Street (established by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through the nearby settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe around two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans should have at the very least been aware of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who were using the market place sometime in the tenth century, and relics found imply that they were living in the local area undoubtedly since the sixth century. The settlement existing then is not discussed till 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book specified Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, incorporated a considerably greater area than only the town itself, and consisted of the settlements of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not to be included until the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" which he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to a number of tenants through the generations, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow throughout the following generations and the coming of a canal and a railway during the 19th Century saw it expand and develop. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard can be described as a booming market town which has seen improved development in the past several years.
