Positioned in the county of Beds in the East of England, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard stands very close to the border in between Beds and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population close to 37,000 and a history going back to Roman days, when the historic A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is believed that there existed settlements in and close to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, early relics and coinage stumbled upon in close proximity offer evidence of this. The age-old Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now named the A5, ran through the neighbouring towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable over 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the village during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was they who were using the market place during the 10th Century, and relics discovered mean that they were settling the region probably since the 6th Century. The settlement as it was then wasn't remarked upon till 906 at which time the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book talked about Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, comprised a considerably larger area than simply the town alone, and contained the settlements of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name appears to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion did not get added up until the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln found it necessary to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to an assortment of tenants through the ages, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).
