Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard lies near the border in between Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population close to 37,000 and a past harping back to the days of the Romans, at which time the Roman built Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is pretty much connected to the nearby town of Linslade and is about halfway between Luton (Bedfordshire) and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it sits next to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a significant quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is thought that there had been settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, age-old relics and coinage discovered in close proximity show proof of this. The longstanding Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now called the A5, went through neighbouring Hockliffe and Dunstable roughly 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans would have at least known of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was them who used a market in around the 10th Century, and artefacts stumbled on suggest that they were residing in the vicinity almost certainly since the 6th Century. The village as it was then was not described until 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 identified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, embraced a lot larger area than only the town itself, and incorporated the hamlets of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the name seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not to be added till the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from another "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to several tenants over the ages, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on expanding throughout the ensuing decades and the arrival of a canal and a railway service in the Nineteenth Century saw the town evolve and develop. Modern day Leighton Buzzard is a growing market town which has witnessed greater development in recent times.
