Leighton Buzzard History: It's felt that there had been settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, early artifacts and coins stumbled on in the area show proof of this. The age-old Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through close by Hockliffe and Dunstable approximately 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans will have at the very least been aware of the village during those times.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who developed the market place sometime in the tenth century, and artefacts picked up suggest that they were dwelling in the neighbourhood quite possibly from the sixth century. The settlement as it was then wasn't referred to till 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book mentioned Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, embodied a lot bigger area than just the town alone, and integrated the settlements of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component was not put in until the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to several tenants through the eras, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on expanding throughout the ensuing generations and the development of a railway and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and evolve.
