The olden Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through the close by areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe some 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans will have at the very least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, embodied a lot bigger area than merely the town alone, and comprised the settlements of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the name could have derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section was not to be inserted before the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from another "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to numerous tenants through the eras, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).
