Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire, the small town of Leighton Buzzard sits near the county boundary in between Bucks and Bedfordshire, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a populace of about thirty seven thousand and a past going back to Roman times, when the Roman built Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the adjacent town of Linslade and it's about halfway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it lays next to the Chilterns and has a significant quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's considered that there had been settlements in and close to what is now called Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, historic artefacts and coinage stumbled on in the area show proof of this. The age-old Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now known as the A5, came through neighbouring Hockliffe and Dunstable over two thousand years ago, and the Romans should have at the very least known of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who created the market place during the 10th Century, and antiquities picked up indicate that they were settling the local area in all probability since the sixth century. The village as it was is not mentioned till 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book identified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, encompassed a lot wider area than only the town alone, and contained the settlements of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town could have originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion wasn't applied prior to the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from another "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a variety of tenants over the years, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even bigger through the succeeding generations and the arrival of a canal and a railway during the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and develop. Today's Leighton Buzzard can be termed a thriving market town that's witnessed accelerated development in recent times.
