Set within the county of Beds, the bustling town of Leighton Buzzard lies close to the boundary between Beds and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of approximately 37,000 and a past harping back to Roman days, at which time the historic Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is felt that there were settlements in and close to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, old artefacts and coins discovered in close proximity show proof of this. The historical Watling Street (made by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through the close by towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe some two thousand years back, and the Romans would have at least known of the village at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was Saxons who set up the market place in around the 10th Century, and relics stumbled on reveal that they were living in the locale more than likely from the sixth century. The village existing then is not listed until 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 outlined Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, embraced a significantly greater area than just the town itself, and covered the hamlets of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not put on up until the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to a great many tenants through the ages, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow throughout the succeeding decades and the appearance of a canal and a railway line during the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and expand.
