Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Situated in the county of Beds, the small town of Leighton Buzzard is near the county border betwixt Bucks and Beds, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of approximately 37,000 and a history going back to the days of the Romans, when the ancient A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is linked to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it is approximately midway between Luton (Bedfordshire) and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it lies near the Chiltern Hills and has an important sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is considered that there existed settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, ancient artifacts and coins picked up nearby give proof of this. The age old Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now called the A5, ran through close by Dunstable and Hockliffe roughly 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans should have at least known of the village at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was them who set up a market in about the tenth century, and artifacts unearthed show that they were residing in the vicinity in all probability from the 6th Century. The village as it was then isn't referred to until 906 after the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book outlined Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, covered a much larger area than merely the town itself, and covered the settlements of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece did not get inserted till the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to various tenants through the years, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow over the coming years and the coming of a railway service and a canal during the 19th Century saw the town develop and expand. Today's Leighton Buzzard can be termed a flourishing market town that's witnessed increased development in recent years.
