Based in the county of Beds in the East of England, the market town of Leighton Buzzard lays very near to the county border between Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a populace of around 37,000 and a past going back to the Roman era, at which time the historical Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is linked to the adjacent town of Linslade and is about midway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it is found next to the Chiltern Hills and has a substantial sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's thought that there had been settlements in and near to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, historic relics and coins unearthed nearby offer evidence of this. The early Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through close by Dunstable and Hockliffe roughly 2,000 in years past, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the village during those times.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who were using a market during the tenth century, and relics discovered show that they were inhabiting the vicinity quite possibly from the 6th Century. The village existing at this time is not remarked upon till 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 outlined Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, covered a considerably greater area than simply the town alone, and included the hamlets of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece did not get included until the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln found it beneficial to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to a number of tenants over the centuries, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even bigger through the succeeding decades and the coming of a railway line and a canal in the 19th Century saw the town develop and expand. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard is a prospering market town that has witnessed increased development in recent years.
