Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the bustling town of Leighton Buzzard lies right on the county border between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population close to thirty seven thousand and a historic past harping back to Roman days, when the early A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the adjoining town of Linslade it is about midway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it stands next to the Chilterns and has an important sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's considered that there existed settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, early artifacts and coins unearthed in close proximity offer proof of this fact. The historic Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now identified as the A5, ran through the close by settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe around about two thousand in years past, and the Romans will have at the very least been aware of the village as they passed it.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who set up the market place sometime in the tenth century, and artifacts stumbled upon show that they were settling the neighbourhood undoubtedly from the 6th Century. The settlement existing at this time isn't described till 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) talked about Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, incorporated a substantially wider area than only the town by itself, and consisted of the hamlets of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town may possibly have come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part wasn't appended up until the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" which he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to numerous tenants over the generations, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on growing throughout the succeeding years and the arrival of a railway line and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw the town grow and develop. Current day Leighton Buzzard is a busy market town which has witnessed greater development in the past few years.
