Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds in the East of England, the market town of Leighton Buzzard sits near the border between Bucks and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a populace close to 37,000 and a past going back to the Roman period, when the historical A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is connected to the adjacent town of Linslade and it is about halfway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it lays next to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a significant sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is considered that there were settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, early artifacts and coinage stumbled upon in the area show proof of this. The historic Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now called the A5, cut through close by Hockliffe and Dunstable about 2,000 years back, and the Romans would have at the very least been aware of the village during those times.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who developed a market during the 10th Century, and antiquities stumbled upon show that they were residing in the region most probably since the sixth century. The commune existing at that time was not cited till 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book listed Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, encompassed a far greater area than only the town itself, and contained the settlements of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name seems to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece wasn't applied prior to the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to a variety of tenants through the centuries, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow during the coming years and the building of a canal and a railway service in the Nineteenth Century saw it evolve and develop. Present day Leighton Buzzard is a blooming market town that's seen increased development in the past several years.
