Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard lays close to the county boundary between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a history stretching back to the era of the Romans, at which time the historic A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is connected to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it's approximately midway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it sits near to the Chiltern Hills and has a significant quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's thought that there were settlements in and close to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, historical artefacts and coins picked up near by show evidence of this fact. The early Watling Street (built by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through close by Dunstable and Hockliffe about two thousand in years past, and the Romans would have at the very least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was Saxons who set up the market place sometime in the tenth century, and antiquities found reveal that they were residing in the region perhaps since the sixth century. The commune as it was then is not reported till 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 recognized Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, covered a far bigger area compared to the town itself, and comprised the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name will probably have derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part wouldn't be added until the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" that was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to several tenants through the centuries, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow throughout the coming generations and the development of a railway and a canal during the 19th Century saw it develop and grow. Modern day Leighton Buzzard is a booming market town which has witnessed greater development in recent years.
