Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Positioned in the county of Beds in the East of England, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard lies close to the county border in between Bucks and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population close to 37,000 and a history harping back to the times of the Romans, when the ancient Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the nearby town of Linslade and it's roughly mid-way between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton (Bedfordshire), it sits near the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's believed that there were settlements in and near to what's now named Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, early artifacts and coinage stumbled upon in the area show proof of this. The ancient Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now named the A5, came through the nearby areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe around about two thousand years back, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the village as they passed it.

The Romans were ultimately followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who used a market sometime in the tenth century, and artifacts discovered suggest that they were settling the area perhaps from the sixth century. The commune as it was is not observed until 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book outlined Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, embraced a significantly bigger area compared to the town itself, and contained the settlements of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the name could very well have been taken from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not to be included until the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to an assortment of tenants through the ages, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on expanding over the ensuing years and the construction of a canal and a railway in the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and expand. Modern day Leighton Buzzard can be described as a prospering market town which has seen increased development in recent years.
