Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds in the East of England, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard sits right on the county boundary in between Beds and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of about thirty seven thousand and a heritage going back to the days of the Romans, at which time the historical A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is connected to the adjacent town of Linslade and is approximately midway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it is found close to the Chiltern Hills and boasts a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It's felt that there were settlements in and close to what's now called Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, ancient artifacts and coins discovered in close proximity offer evidence of this. The early Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, came through neighbouring Hockliffe and Dunstable around 2,000 years ago, and the Romans would have at the very least known of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was them who used a market in about the tenth century, and artefacts stumbled upon suggest that they were settling the area quite likely since the 6th Century. The settlement existing at this time wasn't described till 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) recognised Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, encompassed a far larger area than merely the town alone, and consisted of the hamlets of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component did not get inserted until the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to several tenants through the centuries, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on growing through the ensuing years and the appearance of a railway and a canal during the 19th Century saw the town develop and expand. Modern day Leighton Buzzard is a busy market town which has seen increased development in the last few years.
