Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Set in the county of Beds in the East of England, the market town of Leighton Buzzard lays near to the county boundary between Bucks and Bedfordshire, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of about 37,000 and a history stretching back to the Roman era, when the historic Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is more or less connected to the adjoining town of Linslade it is about mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes, it lies very close to the Chilterns and has a significant sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is thought that there existed settlements in and close to what is now named Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, age-old artefacts and coins stumbled upon near by show evidence of this fact. The ancient Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through the nearby towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe about two thousand years ago, and the Romans should have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who were using a market sometime in the 10th Century, and artifacts stumbled upon show that they were settling the local area quite possibly from the 6th Century. The settlement as such isn't remarked upon till 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) talked about Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, covered a far wider area compared to the town itself, and covered the settlements of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not added up until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from another "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to a great many tenants over the eras, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow through the succeeding decades and the appearance of a canal and a railway during the 19th Century saw it expand and develop. Today's Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a prospering market town that has seen improved development in the past several years.
