Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Situated within the county of Beds in the East of England, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard lies very near to the county border betwixt Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of about 37,000 and a past going back to Roman times, when the Roman built Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is linked to the adjacent town of Linslade and is about halfway between Luton (Bedfordshire) and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it lies very close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has a substantial sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It is thought that there existed settlements in and near to what is now called Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, old artifacts and coinage discovered in close proximity offer evidence of this fact. The historical Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now known as the A5, ran through close by Dunstable and Hockliffe approximately 2,000 in years past, and the Romans should have at least been aware of the village during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was they who set up a market during the 10th Century, and artifacts stumbled upon suggest that they were staying in the local area in all likelihood from the sixth century. The village as it was is not cited until 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book named Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, comprised a significantly larger area than merely the town itself, and consisted of the settlements of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part wouldn't be applied up until the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to numerous tenants through the eras, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even larger over the succeeding decades and the coming of a railway service and a canal in the 19th Century saw it develop and grow. Present day Leighton Buzzard is a booming market town that's witnessed increased development in the past several years.
