Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the bustling town of Leighton Buzzard sits close to the county border in between Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a population close to thirty seven thousand and a history going back to the times of the Romans, when the historical Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the nearby town of Linslade and it's about mid-way between Milton Keynes and Luton, it is placed near to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts an important sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's considered that there were settlements in and close to what's now called Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, old relics and coins discovered near by give proof of this fact. The longstanding Watling Street (made by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through the neighbouring towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe around about 2,000 years back, and the Romans should have at least known of the village at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was Saxons who set up a market during the 10th Century, and artifacts discovered suggest that they were living in the vicinity most probably since the sixth century. The settlement as it was then isn't mentioned until 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) outlined Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, embraced a much greater area than merely the town itself, and comprised the settlements of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element did not get added on before the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from another "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to an assortment of tenants through the ages, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow through the following years and the appearance of a railway service and a canal during the 19th Century saw it develop and expand. Modern Leighton Buzzard is a prosperous market town which has witnessed increased development in current times.
