Found in the county of Beds in the East of England, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard is close to the county border betwixt Bucks and Bedfordshire, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of approximately 37,000 and a history harping back to the era of the Romans, when the early Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the neighbouring town of Linslade and is roughly mid-way between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton (Beds), it is placed near the Chiltern Hills and has a significant sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's considered that there were settlements in and near to what's now called Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, age-old relics and coins picked up near by give evidence of this. The early Watling Street (built by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through neighbouring Dunstable and Hockliffe around two thousand in years past, and the Romans will have at the very least been aware of the village as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was they who set up the market place during the 10th Century, and relics unearthed suggest that they were inhabiting the vicinity undoubtedly since the sixth century. The village as such is not referred to until 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) talked about Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, incorporated a way bigger area than merely the town itself, and integrated the hamlets of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component wouldn't be put in up until the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to a great many tenants through the years, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).
