Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Situated in the county of Bedfordshire, the bustling town of Leighton Buzzard stands near the border in between Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of about thirty seven thousand and a heritage extending back to Roman days, when the early Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is attached to the nearby town of Linslade and it is about halfway between Luton (Bedfordshire) and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it is placed next to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts a vital sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's believed that there were settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, age-old relics and coins unearthed near by show proof of this fact. The ancient Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, came through the nearby settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe around 2,000 years back, and the Romans will have at least known of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who used the market place in about the 10th Century, and relics picked up suggest that they were settling the neighbourhood in all likelihood since the 6th Century. The village as it was is not observed till 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) reported Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, comprised a considerably larger area than just the town alone, and integrated the hamlets of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part wasn't appended up until the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" that was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to numerous tenants through the years, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even larger over the succeeding generations and the construction of a railway and a canal in the 19th Century saw the town develop and grow. Today's Leighton Buzzard is a thriving market town that has seen increased development in modern times.
