Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the town of Leighton Buzzard stands right on the county boundary betwixt Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a populace of about thirty seven thousand and a historic past stretching back to the Roman period, when the historical Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the neighbouring town of Linslade and it's approximately halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it is located very close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts an important sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It's thought that there were settlements in and near to what's now called Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, historic artefacts and coinage uncovered near by show evidence of this fact. The longstanding Watling Street (made by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, came through nearby Hockliffe and Dunstable roughly 2,000 years ago, and the Romans should have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was Saxons who used the market place during the 10th Century, and artifacts picked up show that they were dwelling in the neighbourhood in all likelihood since the 6th Century. The village as it was was not documented till 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book mentioned Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, covered a much wider area than merely the town by itself, and consisted of the settlements of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece was not to be added until the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from another "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to a great many tenants over the years, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow during the ensuing decades and the coming of a canal and a railway in the 19th Century saw the town evolve and develop. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard is a blooming market town which has seen improved development in modern times.
