Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the town of Leighton Buzzard lies right on the border in between Bedfordshire and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a historic past harping back to the Roman era, when the historic Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the neighbouring town of Linslade it is approximately mid-way between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it is situated very close to the Chilterns and boasts a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's considered that there existed settlements in and close to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, early artefacts and coins unearthed nearby offer evidence of this. The historic Watling Street (made by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through neighbouring Dunstable and Hockliffe about 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans should have at the very least been aware of the village as they passed it.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who were using the market place in about the 10th Century, and antiquities picked up suggest that they were inhabiting the local area in all probability since the 6th Century. The village as such isn't documented until 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book outlined Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, comprised a lot larger area than just the town itself, and consisted of the hamlets of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component was not to be applied until the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to numerous tenants over the ages, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on growing throughout the coming generations and the appearance of a railway service and a canal during the 19th Century saw the town grow and develop. Current day Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a thriving market town which has seen improved development in the recent past.
