Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard is very near to the boundary between Bucks and Beds, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a historical past extending back to the times of the Romans, at which time the historical A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is more or less joined to the neighbouring town of Linslade and is roughly halfway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it can be found next to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts a significant quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's believed that there existed settlements in and close to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, ancient relics and coinage uncovered in close proximity show proof of this. The age old Watling Street (made by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through the neighbouring towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable approximately two thousand years back, and the Romans should have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard at this time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who were using the market place during the 10th Century, and antiquities discovered suggest that they were settling the area quite likely since the sixth century. The village as such was not cited till 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 identified Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, encompassed a far wider area than just the town by itself, and included the hamlets of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name appears to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component did not get included before the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to several tenants through the generations, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on expanding through the following years and the establishing of of a canal and a railway line in the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and grow. Current day Leighton Buzzard is a flourishing market town which has seen accelerated development in the recent past.
