Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard lays close to the boundary betwixt Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of about thirty seven thousand and a story going back to the Roman period, at which time the Roman built Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is linked to the adjoining town of Linslade and is approximately midway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton (Beds), it is located next to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts an important sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's felt that there existed settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, old artifacts and coinage stumbled on near by show evidence of this. The historic Watling Street (established by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through the neighbouring settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe some two thousand years back, and the Romans should have at least known of the village during those times.

The Romans were eventually followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who set up the market place sometime in the tenth century, and artifacts unearthed show that they were residing in the area probably from the 6th Century. The commune existing then isn't mentioned till 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) named Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, embraced a substantially larger area compared to the town by itself, and integrated the hamlets of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component was not to be applied till the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" which he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to several tenants over the centuries, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow through the following generations and the construction of a canal and a railway during the 19th Century saw the town develop and expand. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard is a growing market town that has seen greater development in the past few years.
