The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, embodied a far bigger area compared to the town alone, and consisted of the hamlets of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town could possibly have come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section was not to be put on up until the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln found it crucial to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a great many tenants through the eras, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).
