Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Situated within the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard sits very close to the boundary between Beds and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of around 37,000 and a historic past harping back to the days of the Romans, at which time the early A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the nearby town of Linslade and is roughly mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes, it is situated close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts a significant quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's thought that there existed settlements in and near to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, early relics and coins discovered in the area show evidence of this. The historical Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through the neighbouring towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe over 2,000 years ago, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the village at this time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who developed a market sometime in the tenth century, and relics discovered show that they were inhabiting the area more than likely from the sixth century. The village as it was is not described till 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 listed Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, embodied a far bigger area than simply the town by itself, and included the settlements of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not to be put in before the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from another "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to numerous tenants over the centuries, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow through the succeeding decades and the construction of a canal and a railway during the Nineteenth Century saw the town expand and develop. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard is a prospering market town that's seen greater development in the past few years.
