Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the market town of Leighton Buzzard lays near the county border between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of about thirty seven thousand and a past harping back to Roman times, when the ancient Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is attached to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it's roughly mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it is placed close to the Chilterns and boasts an important sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It is considered that there had been settlements in and near to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, historic artifacts and coinage picked up in close proximity show proof of this. The early Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now identified as the A5, came through the nearby areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable about two thousand in years past, and the Romans should have at least known of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who used the market place in around the tenth century, and antiquities uncovered show that they were residing in the neighbourhood almost certainly from the 6th Century. The settlement as it was wasn't mentioned until 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 recognized Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, incorporated a substantially greater area compared to the town by itself, and integrated the settlements of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name may well have come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section did not get appended up until the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" that was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to an assortment of tenants over the eras, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow throughout the succeeding years and the building of a railway line and a canal during the 19th Century saw it develop and grow. Present day Leighton Buzzard is a flourishing market town that has witnessed greater development in recent times.
