Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's thought that there existed settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, historical relics and coins unearthed in close proximity show proof of this fact. The old Watling Street (established by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through nearby Hockliffe and Dunstable about 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who were using the market place during the 10th Century, and antiquities stumbled on show that they were inhabiting the locale in all likelihood since the sixth century. The village existing at that time was not reported until 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book mentioned Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, comprised a significantly greater area compared to the town alone, and covered the hamlets of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component wouldn't be added up until the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to an assortment of tenants over the ages, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even larger through the following generations and the development of a railway service and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and evolve. Present day Leighton Buzzard can be termed a prosperous market town that has seen accelerated development in the past several years.
