Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Beds, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard lies very close to the boundary between Beds and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of about 37,000 and a heritage stretching back to the Roman period, when the Roman built Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is attached to the nearby town of Linslade and it's about mid-way between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton, it lies near the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts a vital sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is felt that there were settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, historical artifacts and coinage stumbled on in close proximity offer evidence of this fact. The historic Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through the neighbouring settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable around about two thousand years ago, and the Romans will have at the very least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who introduced a market in around the tenth century, and antiquities uncovered indicate that they were residing in the neighbourhood almost certainly since the 6th Century. The village existing then was not cited until 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) named Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, embraced a substantially wider area than simply the town itself, and contained the settlements of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the town's name could perhaps have come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component wouldn't be applied till the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln found it important to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to several tenants over the eras, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even bigger over the succeeding decades and the appearance of a canal and a railway service during the 19th Century saw the town develop and develop. Modern Leighton Buzzard can be termed a thriving market town that's witnessed increased development in recent years.
