Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard lies close to the boundary between Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population close to 37,000 and a historical past stretching back to the days of the Romans, when the ancient Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is attached to the nearby town of Linslade and is about halfway between Luton (Beds) and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it is found near the Chilterns and has a significant sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's thought that there were settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, historical artifacts and coins picked up in the area offer evidence of this fact. The age-old Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now called the A5, went through the neighbouring settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable over two thousand years back, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was Saxons who were using the market place sometime in the tenth century, and artefacts stumbled on indicate that they were living in the neighbourhood in all probability since the 6th Century. The commune as it was then isn't cited until 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book recognized Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, embraced a way larger area compared to the town itself, and included the settlements of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece was not applied until the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a number of tenants over the centuries, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even bigger over the following decades and the coming of a canal and a railway in the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and evolve. Current day Leighton Buzzard can be described as a successful market town which has witnessed greater development in the last few years.
