Situated within the county of Beds in the East of England, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard lays very near to the county boundary betwixt Buckinghamshire and Beds, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a populace of approximately 37,000 and a heritage harping back to the era of the Romans, at which time the historical Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the adjacent town of Linslade and is about midway between Luton (Bedfordshire) and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it can be found close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a vital quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's felt that there existed settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, ancient artefacts and coins stumbled on in close proximity give proof of this. The historic Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through the neighbouring areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe around 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans should have at least been aware of the village during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was them who introduced a market in about the tenth century, and artefacts uncovered show that they were living in the locale most probably from the sixth century. The village as it was is not discussed till 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 recognised Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, comprised a far bigger area compared to the town itself, and integrated the settlements of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part wouldn't be applied till the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to various tenants through the generations, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even larger over the ensuing years and the establishing of of a railway line and a canal in the 19th Century saw the town grow and develop. Present day Leighton Buzzard is a flourishing market town that's seen improved development in recent years.
