Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard lies right on the county border between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of around thirty seven thousand and a historic past going back to Roman times, at which time the historic Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the neighbouring town of Linslade and it's about halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it stands very close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts a substantial sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's believed that there had been settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, old relics and coins stumbled on near by offer evidence of this. The olden Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through nearby Dunstable and Hockliffe about two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who were using the market place in about the 10th Century, and artifacts stumbled on show that they were settling the vicinity in all likelihood from the 6th Century. The commune existing at this time is not mentioned till 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book listed Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, embodied a substantially larger area than simply the town itself, and comprised the settlements of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name will probably have come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wasn't put on until the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" that was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to several tenants over the generations, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow over the succeeding generations and the arrival of a canal and a railway in the 19th Century saw the town develop and evolve. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard is a flourishing market town that has witnessed increased development in modern times.
