Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's thought that there existed settlements in and close to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, early relics and coins stumbled on in close proximity offer evidence of this fact. The historic Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through close by Dunstable and Hockliffe some 2,000 years ago, and the Romans would have at the very least been aware of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who developed a market in around the 10th Century, and relics discovered show that they were inhabiting the local area quite possibly from the sixth century. The village as such was not discussed until 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) outlined Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, incorporated a considerably larger area than just the town itself, and included the hamlets of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town could very well have been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component wasn't inserted till the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a variety of tenants through the centuries, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).
