Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard lays close to the boundary in between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of about 37,000 and a history going back to Roman times, when the ancient Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is more or less joined to the nearby town of Linslade and it's approximately midway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it sits very close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts a vital sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It is thought that there existed settlements in and close to what is now called Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, ancient artefacts and coins unearthed in the area show evidence of this. The ancient Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now known as the A5, came through the nearby areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe over 2,000 years ago, and the Romans should have at least known of the village at that time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who developed the market place in around the tenth century, and relics stumbled upon show that they were settling the neighbourhood most likely from the sixth century. The commune existing at this time isn't discussed till 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 outlined Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, encompassed a substantially larger area than simply the town alone, and comprised the settlements of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not put on prior to the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln found it imperative to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to a variety of tenants through the eras, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow over the following years and the construction of a railway service and a canal in the 19th Century saw it develop and evolve. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard can be described as a prosperous market town which has seen greater development in the last few years.
