Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard stands right on the county border between Beds and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of about thirty seven thousand and a story going back to the Roman era, at which time the early A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is connected to the adjoining town of Linslade and it is about midway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it is located next to the Chilterns and has an important sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is felt that there had been settlements in and close to what's now called Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, age-old artefacts and coinage stumbled on nearby offer proof of this fact. The early Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through the neighbouring areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe roughly 2,000 years ago, and the Romans would have at the very least known of the village as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who created the market place in around the tenth century, and artefacts found suggest that they were inhabiting the region in all likelihood from the 6th Century. The settlement as such was not discussed till 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book identified Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, comprised a significantly greater area compared to the town by itself, and comprised the settlements of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece was not inserted up until the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln found it beneficial to differentiate it from another "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to various tenants over the centuries, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow over the coming decades and the construction of a canal and a railway line during the 19th Century saw it develop and expand. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard can be described as a booming market town which has seen improved development in recent times.
