Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Facts for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds in the East of England, the small town of Leighton Buzzard lies close to the county boundary between Bucks and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of around thirty seven thousand and a story extending back to the times of the Romans, at which time the early A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is connected to the adjacent town of Linslade and is approximately mid-way between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton, it is located near the Chiltern Hills and boasts a vital quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's believed that there existed settlements in and near to what's now named Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, ancient artefacts and coinage picked up in the area offer evidence of this. The historical Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through the close by areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe about two thousand years ago, and the Romans should have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was they who used a market sometime in the tenth century, and artifacts stumbled upon show that they were living in the area most probably since the 6th Century. The commune as such was not reported till 906 at which time the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book recognised Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, encompassed a far bigger area than just the town by itself, and contained the hamlets of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section did not get inserted till the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to a number of tenants over the centuries, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow during the succeeding years and the coming of a railway and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and evolve. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard can be described as a prosperous market town that's witnessed greater development in recent times.
