Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard stands near to the border between Beds and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of approximately 37,000 and a history extending back to the times of the Romans, at which time the historic Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is pretty much connected to the neighbouring town of Linslade and is roughly midway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it lies next to the Chiltern Hills and boasts an important quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's felt that there were settlements in and close to what's now named Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, old relics and coins discovered near by show proof of this. The historical Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through nearby Dunstable and Hockliffe over 2,000 in years past, and the Romans would have at the very least been aware of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was them who created the market place sometime in the tenth century, and antiquities found show that they were settling the area very likely from the sixth century. The commune as such wasn't reported till 906 after the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book described Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, embodied a far bigger area than simply the town itself, and integrated the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to been taken from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section wasn't put in up until the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to numerous tenants over the centuries, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even larger over the following decades and the coming of a railway line and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and grow. Present day Leighton Buzzard can be termed a flourishing market town that's witnessed improved development in the past few years.
