Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard lies right on the boundary betwixt Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a heritage harping back to the days of the Romans, at which time the early Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is more or less joined to the nearby town of Linslade and is approximately midway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it is placed near to the Chilterns and has a vital quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is believed that there were settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, ancient relics and coinage found in close proximity offer proof of this fact. The ancient Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through close by Dunstable and Hockliffe around 2,000 years back, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who introduced the market place during the tenth century, and antiquities discovered show that they were staying in the neighbourhood almost certainly from the sixth century. The commune as such wasn't documented till 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book specified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, incorporated a considerably greater area than only the town alone, and integrated the settlements of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wasn't included up until the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from another "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to a great many tenants over the ages, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on expanding over the succeeding decades and the arrival of a railway service and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and expand. Modern day Leighton Buzzard can be described as a blooming market town which has witnessed increased development in the past few decades.
