Situated in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard stands near to the county boundary in between Bucks and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a historical past going back to the days of the Romans, at which time the historical Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjacent town of Linslade it is approximately halfway between Luton (Bedfordshire) and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it lies next to the Chilterns and boasts an important quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It is thought that there had been settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, historical artifacts and coins picked up nearby offer evidence of this fact. The historical Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now known as the A5, came through neighbouring Hockliffe and Dunstable about 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who set up the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and antiquities stumbled upon imply that they were residing in the vicinity very likely since the 6th Century. The commune as such was not referred to till 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) reported Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, embraced a substantially greater area than only the town itself, and comprised the hamlets of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece wouldn't be added up until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to a variety of tenants through the ages, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even bigger throughout the coming years and the appearance of a canal and a railway line in the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and evolve. Today's Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a growing market town that has witnessed increased development in the past few decades.
