Found in the county of Beds in the East of England, the town of Leighton Buzzard lies close to the county boundary between Bucks and Beds, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of approximately 37,000 and a heritage stretching back to Roman days, at which time the historical A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's felt that there existed settlements in and near to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, early relics and coins stumbled on near by give evidence of this fact. The ancient Watling Street (established by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, cut through the close by towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe about 2,000 years back, and the Romans should have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was they who created a market during the tenth century, and antiquities discovered reveal that they were settling the area almost certainly from the sixth century. The settlement existing then is not discussed till 906 at which time the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) named Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, covered a considerably larger area than simply the town itself, and contained the hamlets of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part wouldn't be inserted prior to the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to several tenants over the eras, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).
