Positioned within the county of Bedfordshire, the small town of Leighton Buzzard sits close to the boundary between Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a population close to 37,000 and a historic past going back to the Roman period, at which time the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. Leighton Buzzard History: It is considered that there existed settlements in and close to what is now named Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, old artefacts and coins stumbled upon in close proximity give evidence of this. The historical Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now called the A5, cut through neighbouring Hockliffe and Dunstable about two thousand in years past, and the Romans will have at the very least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who developed the market place during the 10th Century, and antiquities uncovered indicate that they were dwelling in the area quite likely since the sixth century. The commune existing at this time was not observed until 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) documented Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, incorporated a considerably bigger area than merely the town alone, and comprised the settlements of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town may have come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece was not to be added until the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to several tenants over the eras, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even larger throughout the succeeding generations and the arrival of a canal and a railway in the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and grow. Current day Leighton Buzzard is a bustling market town that's witnessed greater development in modern times.
