Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard is right on the boundary betwixt Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of approximately 37,000 and a story going back to the days of the Romans, when the historic A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the adjoining town of Linslade and is roughly midway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it sits very close to the Chilterns and has an important sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It is felt that there were settlements in and close to what's now named Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, early artefacts and coinage discovered in the area offer evidence of this fact. The age-old Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now named the A5, came through nearby Dunstable and Hockliffe approximately 2,000 years back, and the Romans would have at the very least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who used a market during the tenth century, and antiquities stumbled on show that they were living in the local area almost certainly since the sixth century. The settlement as it was is not cited till 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 listed Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, comprised a substantially greater area compared to the town by itself, and comprised the hamlets of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component was not appended until the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to an assortment of tenants over the ages, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on growing through the succeeding decades and the development of a canal and a railway line in the 19th Century saw it grow and develop. Modern day Leighton Buzzard is a flourishing market town that has seen greater development in the last few years.
