Based in the county of Bedfordshire, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard lays right on the county border betwixt Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of about thirty seven thousand and a past stretching back to the times of the Romans, at which time the ancient A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is believed that there existed settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, historical artefacts and coinage uncovered in the area give evidence of this. The longstanding Watling Street (made by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through the close by towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe about 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans would have at the very least been aware of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was them who used a market during the 10th Century, and artifacts uncovered show that they were staying in the neighbourhood very likely since the sixth century. The settlement as it was was not discussed till 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book described Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, covered a far bigger area than just the town alone, and integrated the settlements of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the name appears to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece did not get added before the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from another "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to an assortment of tenants through the years, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).
