Positioned in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard lays very close to the border between Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of approximately 37,000 and a history going back to the Roman period, when the historical Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the nearby town of Linslade and it is roughly midway between Luton (Beds) and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it is located very close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's felt that there were settlements in and close to what's now called Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, ancient relics and coins uncovered in close proximity offer proof of this. The historical Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now called the A5, ran through nearby Hockliffe and Dunstable around 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans would have at the very least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who used the market place during the tenth century, and artefacts unearthed show that they were settling the neighbourhood almost certainly since the 6th Century. The settlement as it was then is not discussed till 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) described Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, embraced a way greater area than merely the town by itself, and covered the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name might have originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece did not get included before the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" that was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a great many tenants through the eras, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even larger throughout the ensuing years and the appearance of a canal and a railway service in the 19th Century saw the town grow and develop.
