Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Facts for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Situated in the county of Beds, the town of Leighton Buzzard lies near the boundary between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of around 37,000 and a story harping back to Roman days, when the historical A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the adjoining town of Linslade it is roughly midway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it is placed very close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has an important sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's considered that there had been settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, age-old artifacts and coinage unearthed in close proximity show proof of this fact. The early Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through close by Dunstable and Hockliffe around two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans should have at least been aware of the village at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was them who were using a market in about the 10th Century, and artifacts uncovered show that they were inhabiting the local area most likely since the sixth century. The village as it was is not reported until 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book recognised Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, covered a way larger area than only the town alone, and contained the hamlets of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town may have come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not included till the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to numerous tenants through the generations, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow throughout the coming years and the appearance of a railway service and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw the town evolve and develop.
