Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds in the East of England, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard is very near to the border in between Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of around thirty seven thousand and a history going back to the days of the Romans, at which time the historic A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the nearby town of Linslade and it's roughly halfway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton (Bedfordshire), it can be found near to the Chiltern Hills and boasts an important quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's thought that there existed settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, old relics and coins discovered in close proximity give evidence of this. The old Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now named the A5, went through neighbouring Hockliffe and Dunstable about 2,000 years ago, and the Romans will have at the very least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who set up a market sometime in the 10th Century, and antiquities stumbled upon reveal that they were dwelling in the region perhaps from the sixth century. The settlement as such isn't observed until 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book listed Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, comprised a substantially bigger area than just the town itself, and incorporated the settlements of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name could very well have derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section was not to be added up until the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" which he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a number of tenants through the generations, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even larger over the following years and the appearance of a railway line and a canal in the 19th Century saw it develop and evolve. Today's Leighton Buzzard is a thriving market town that has witnessed improved development in the past several years.
