Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Situated in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the small town of Leighton Buzzard stands very near to the county border in between Beds and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of about thirty seven thousand and a history going back to the days of the Romans, at which time the early Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is pretty much connected to the adjacent town of Linslade and is roughly midway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it is located near to the Chiltern Hills and has a significant sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is thought that there were settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, ancient artefacts and coins stumbled on in the area offer evidence of this. The longstanding Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now called the A5, came through the close by areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable around 2,000 in years past, and the Romans will have at the very least been aware of the village as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was Saxons who were using a market sometime in the tenth century, and artefacts stumbled upon show that they were staying in the locale quite likely since the sixth century. The settlement as such wasn't described till 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 described Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, comprised a way wider area than simply the town alone, and comprised the settlements of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name appears to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section wouldn't be inserted till the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from another "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to several tenants through the centuries, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on growing over the coming decades and the arrival of a canal and a railway service during the 19th Century saw it develop and expand. Today's Leighton Buzzard can be termed a prospering market town that has witnessed accelerated development in the last few years.
