The olden Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now termed the A5, went through the neighbouring towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable around two thousand years ago, and the Romans should have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who set up a market in about the 10th Century, and antiquities found show that they were inhabiting the vicinity most likely since the sixth century. The village as it was then wasn't cited until 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) specified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, encompassed a substantially greater area than only the town alone, and integrated the hamlets of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion wasn't put in up until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln found it necessary to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to various tenants through the generations, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even larger during the following decades and the coming of a railway service and a canal during the 19th Century saw the town develop and develop. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard can be termed a prosperous market town that's witnessed increased development in the past several years.
