Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Positioned within the county of Beds in the East of England, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard is very near to the county boundary between Bucks and Beds, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of about thirty seven thousand and a story going back to Roman days, when the ancient Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is connected to the adjoining town of Linslade it is roughly halfway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it is placed close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's believed that there had been settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, ancient relics and coinage unearthed in close proximity show proof of this fact. The olden Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through the neighbouring areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe over 2,000 years ago, and the Romans will have at the very least been aware of the village as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who were using the market place sometime in the tenth century, and antiquities unearthed imply that they were dwelling in the neighbourhood quite possibly since the 6th Century. The village existing at this time wasn't remarked upon till 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 mentioned Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, encompassed a far wider area than only the town by itself, and comprised the hamlets of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece did not get included until the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to several tenants over the centuries, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow during the ensuing decades and the establishing of of a railway line and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw the town expand and develop. Current day Leighton Buzzard is a prosperous market town that has seen increased development in the past few years.
