Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Set in the county of Beds in the East of England, the town of Leighton Buzzard sits close to the county border between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of around thirty seven thousand and a history extending back to the era of the Romans, when the Roman built Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the neighbouring town of Linslade and is about halfway between Luton (Bedfordshire) and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it sits near the Chiltern Hills and has a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is believed that there had been settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, old relics and coins found in the area offer evidence of this fact. The ancient Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, cut through the close by settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe approximately two thousand years back, and the Romans will have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at that time.

The Romans were consequently followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who used a market in about the tenth century, and relics unearthed show that they were staying in the vicinity very likely from the sixth century. The village as it was wasn't listed till 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) identified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, embraced a much larger area than only the town by itself, and covered the hamlets of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wasn't added prior to the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to a number of tenants through the eras, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow during the following generations and the arrival of a railway and a canal in the 19th Century saw the town grow and develop. Modern Leighton Buzzard can be termed a bustling market town which has seen improved development in recent times.
