Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Positioned within the county of Beds, the market town of Leighton Buzzard is very near to the county boundary between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of around 37,000 and a heritage going back to Roman times, when the historical Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is linked to the nearby town of Linslade and is roughly midway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it is placed near the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has a vital quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's believed that there had been settlements in and near to what's now named Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, early artifacts and coinage unearthed in close proximity show evidence of this fact. The age-old Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, ran through close by Dunstable and Hockliffe roughly two thousand years ago, and the Romans should have at the very least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was they who used the market place sometime in the tenth century, and relics unearthed suggest that they were settling the vicinity more than likely since the 6th Century. The settlement existing then isn't observed until 906 at which time the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book recognised Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, incorporated a considerably bigger area compared to the town alone, and consisted of the hamlets of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not to be put in before the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to various tenants through the generations, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even larger throughout the succeeding years and the coming of a railway line and a canal in the 19th Century saw it develop and grow. Modern day Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a thriving market town that's seen greater development in the past few decades.
