Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Set in the county of Bedfordshire, the town of Leighton Buzzard sits close to the border between Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population close to thirty seven thousand and a past going back to the Roman era, when the historical A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjacent town of Linslade and it is roughly midway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton, it is situated near the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts a vital sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's felt that there were settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, age-old relics and coinage picked up in the area show proof of this. The historic Watling Street (made by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through neighbouring Hockliffe and Dunstable around about two thousand years back, and the Romans would have at least known of the village as they passed it.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who used the market place during the tenth century, and artifacts unearthed show that they were inhabiting the region most probably since the sixth century. The commune as it was then was not observed till 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) mentioned Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, embodied a considerably larger area than merely the town by itself, and comprised the settlements of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to been taken from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not added on up until the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln found it vital to distinguish it from another "Leighton" which he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to several tenants through the eras, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on growing through the coming generations and the coming of a railway and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and evolve. Modern day Leighton Buzzard can be termed a prospering market town which has seen greater development in the past few years.
