Based in the county of Beds, the small town of Leighton Buzzard sits close to the boundary between Bucks and Beds, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population close to 37,000 and a historic past going back to the Roman era, at which time the historic Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's believed that there existed settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, historical relics and coinage picked up in the area offer evidence of this. The ancient Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now called the A5, cut through the nearby towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe around about two thousand in years past, and the Romans should have at least been aware of the village at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was they who used the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and artefacts picked up mean that they were settling the local area most probably from the sixth century. The settlement existing then is not cited until 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book described Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, embraced a lot larger area than merely the town itself, and incorporated the settlements of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name appears to derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece did not get inserted up until the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a number of tenants over the years, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on growing through the following years and the building of a canal and a railway line during the Nineteenth Century saw it expand and develop. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a prosperous market town that's witnessed greater development in recent times.
