Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Situated within the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard sits near to the border in between Buckinghamshire and Beds, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of approximately 37,000 and a historic past going back to Roman days, at which time the ancient A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is connected to the adjoining town of Linslade it is roughly mid-way between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton, it stands close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts a significant sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It is thought that there existed settlements in and near to what's now called Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, early artefacts and coins uncovered near by show evidence of this. The longstanding Watling Street (made by the Romans), now called the A5, cut through the nearby towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable around 2,000 years ago, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was they who were using the market place sometime in the tenth century, and relics unearthed suggest that they were living in the neighbourhood perhaps from the 6th Century. The village as it was isn't cited until 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book specified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, encompassed a substantially larger area than just the town by itself, and contained the settlements of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part wasn't put in before the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from another "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to a great many tenants through the years, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even larger throughout the following decades and the building of a canal and a railway line during the 19th Century saw it develop and evolve. Modern Leighton Buzzard is a blooming market town that's seen greater development in current times.
