Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's thought that there existed settlements in or around what's now named Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, early artifacts and coins unearthed in close proximity give proof of this fact. The ancient Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now called the A5, ran through the close by areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe over 2,000 years back, and the Romans would have at least been aware of the village as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was Saxons who were using the market place sometime in the tenth century, and relics found suggest that they were dwelling in the locale in all likelihood since the sixth century. The commune as such was not referred to till 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book recognised Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, comprised a considerably larger area compared to the town by itself, and contained the hamlets of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion wasn't put in until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to a variety of tenants over the years, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).
