Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Set in the county of Beds in the East of England, the small town of Leighton Buzzard is right on the county border in between Buckinghamshire and Beds, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population close to thirty seven thousand and a historical past extending back to the era of the Romans, when the historic A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is pretty much connected to the nearby town of Linslade and it is roughly midway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it is placed next to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a significant sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's felt that there were settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, old relics and coinage discovered nearby give evidence of this fact. The olden Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now termed the A5, came through neighbouring Dunstable and Hockliffe roughly two thousand years ago, and the Romans should have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who used a market in around the 10th Century, and artefacts picked up mean that they were residing in the locale undoubtedly since the 6th Century. The settlement existing at that time isn't documented till 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book reported Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, comprised a significantly greater area than only the town by itself, and integrated the hamlets of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not to be appended up until the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from another "Leighton" that was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to a number of tenants over the centuries, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow throughout the coming years and the building of a railway line and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw it evolve and develop. Current day Leighton Buzzard is a busy market town which has seen accelerated development in the past several years.
