Based in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the small town of Leighton Buzzard sits right on the boundary betwixt Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a past going back to the days of the Romans, when the historical Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the adjacent town of Linslade and it is about halfway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it lies next to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts a significant sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's believed that there existed settlements in and near to what's now called Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, ancient relics and coinage found near by offer evidence of this. The age-old Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now known as the A5, ran through close by Dunstable and Hockliffe over 2,000 in years past, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the village at this time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who were using the market place in about the 10th Century, and antiquities stumbled on show that they were dwelling in the neighbourhood probably since the sixth century. The village existing then isn't discussed till 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) reported Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, embraced a substantially wider area than simply the town by itself, and included the hamlets of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part wasn't put in until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" that was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to an assortment of tenants over the ages, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even larger over the following years and the construction of a canal and a railway line during the 19th Century saw the town develop and grow. Today's Leighton Buzzard is a growing market town that's seen improved development in current times.
