Located in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard lies near to the county boundary betwixt Bucks and Beds, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a heritage harping back to the days of the Romans, at which time the early Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. Leighton Buzzard History: It's considered that there existed settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, ancient artefacts and coins found nearby offer evidence of this fact. The age old Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now identified as the A5, cut through the nearby areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable some two thousand in years past, and the Romans would have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at that time.

The Romans were ultimately followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who developed the market place in around the 10th Century, and artifacts stumbled on show that they were residing in the area very likely since the 6th Century. The settlement existing then is not listed till 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) outlined Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, incorporated a significantly wider area than merely the town by itself, and included the hamlets of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not to be put on before the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to an assortment of tenants over the eras, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow over the succeeding generations and the appearance of a railway and a canal during the 19th Century saw it expand and develop. Today's Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a successful market town that's witnessed improved development in the recent past.
