Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard is near the county border in between Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of approximately 37,000 and a story stretching back to the Roman era, at which time the early A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is linked to the adjoining town of Linslade and it is approximately halfway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it lies near the Chiltern Hills and boasts a significant sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is believed that there existed settlements in and close to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, old artefacts and coinage unearthed in close proximity offer evidence of this fact. The age old Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through the neighbouring towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable around two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans will have at the very least been aware of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was they who used a market sometime in the 10th Century, and antiquities stumbled on show that they were staying in the locale more than likely from the 6th Century. The village existing at that time is not referred to till 906 after the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book documented Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, encompassed a lot greater area than just the town itself, and incorporated the hamlets of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section was not to be put on until the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to a variety of tenants over the ages, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow over the succeeding generations and the appearance of a canal and a railway service during the 19th Century saw it develop and expand. Modern day Leighton Buzzard is a booming market town which has seen improved development in the past few decades.
