Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds in the East of England, the town of Leighton Buzzard is very near to the border betwixt Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a population close to 37,000 and a past going back to Roman times, when the historic Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the nearby town of Linslade and it is about halfway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton (Beds), it is located near to the Chiltern Hills and boasts a significant quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's considered that there were settlements in and close to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, ancient artefacts and coinage unearthed in the area show evidence of this. The age old Watling Street (built by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, ran through the nearby areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable about 2,000 years ago, and the Romans would have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who were using the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and artefacts unearthed show that they were staying in the locale very likely since the 6th Century. The village as it was isn't referred to till 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 named Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, comprised a significantly bigger area than just the town itself, and comprised the settlements of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not to be applied until the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from another "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to various tenants through the ages, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even larger over the ensuing generations and the establishing of of a railway and a canal during the 19th Century saw it develop and evolve. Modern Leighton Buzzard can be termed a growing market town that's seen increased development in modern times.
