Based in the county of Beds in the East of England, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard sits near the border between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a populace close to thirty seven thousand and a heritage going back to the times of the Romans, when the early Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the adjacent town of Linslade and is about mid-way between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton (Beds), it stands very close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts a significant sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's considered that there existed settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, historic artifacts and coinage unearthed in close proximity give evidence of this. The olden Watling Street (made by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through nearby Hockliffe and Dunstable around about two thousand years back, and the Romans will have at the very least known of the village at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who introduced the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and artefacts stumbled on indicate that they were inhabiting the region undoubtedly from the sixth century. The village existing then wasn't remarked upon till 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book reported Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, incorporated a significantly larger area than only the town itself, and comprised the settlements of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town may very well have come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wasn't added on prior to the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from another "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to several tenants through the eras, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).
