Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Beds, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard lies very near to the border between Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a story harping back to Roman times, when the historic A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is linked to the adjoining town of Linslade and is approximately midway between Luton (Beds) and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it is found very close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts an important sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It is considered that there were settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, old artifacts and coins found in close proximity give proof of this fact. The historic Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through nearby Hockliffe and Dunstable about 2,000 in years past, and the Romans will have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who were using a market during the tenth century, and antiquities stumbled upon show that they were inhabiting the vicinity possibly since the 6th Century. The commune as it was is not listed till 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 recognized Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, comprised a considerably greater area compared to the town by itself, and covered the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name will have come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part wouldn't be added till the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to several tenants through the generations, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on growing over the following generations and the coming of a canal and a railway service in the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and evolve. Today's Leighton Buzzard is a prosperous market town that has seen improved development in current times.
