Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Facts for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard is close to the county border in between Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of approximately 37,000 and a story going back to the Roman era, when the historical Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is attached to the neighbouring town of Linslade and is about mid-way between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it lays next to the Chilterns and boasts an important sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It's considered that there existed settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, early artifacts and coinage discovered in the area offer evidence of this fact. The age-old Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through the neighbouring areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable over two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans would have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at this time.

The Romans were subsequently followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who used the market place sometime in the tenth century, and artifacts discovered show that they were settling the locale most likely since the 6th Century. The settlement as it was then is not reported until 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book recognized Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, embraced a way larger area compared to the town alone, and contained the hamlets of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to been taken from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component was not to be included prior to the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln found it crucial to distinguish it from another "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to various tenants over the years, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even bigger over the following years and the appearance of a railway line and a canal during the 19th Century saw it develop and grow. Today's Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a prospering market town that has seen increased development in the past few decades.
