Located in the county of Beds, the small town of Leighton Buzzard is very near to the border betwixt Beds and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a populace of about thirty seven thousand and a past harping back to the Roman era, when the early Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is believed that there existed settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, early artifacts and coins uncovered near by give evidence of this. The age old Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now named the A5, came through nearby Dunstable and Hockliffe some 2,000 in years past, and the Romans would have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard at this time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who developed a market in about the tenth century, and artifacts found suggest that they were living in the neighbourhood perhaps since the sixth century. The settlement as it was wasn't mentioned until 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) specified Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, encompassed a much greater area compared to the town alone, and consisted of the hamlets of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part wouldn't be included until the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to numerous tenants over the generations, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).
