Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the market town of Leighton Buzzard is close to the border betwixt Beds and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of about 37,000 and a past extending back to the times of the Romans, when the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is pretty much connected to the nearby town of Linslade and is about halfway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it lies close to the Chiltern Hills and boasts an important sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's considered that there existed settlements in and near to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, historic relics and coinage stumbled on in the area give evidence of this. The early Watling Street (built by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through the nearby settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable approximately two thousand years ago, and the Romans will have at least known of Leighton Buzzard at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who set up the market place sometime in the tenth century, and artifacts picked up show that they were settling the neighbourhood in all probability from the sixth century. The settlement as it was wasn't discussed till 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book described Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, embraced a way larger area than simply the town itself, and incorporated the hamlets of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section was not to be added on till the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from another "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to many different tenants over the eras, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on growing during the ensuing decades and the arrival of a railway service and a canal during the 19th Century saw it develop and develop. Current day Leighton Buzzard is a growing market town that has witnessed increased development in the last few years.
