Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Beds in the East of England, the town of Leighton Buzzard lies near to the border betwixt Bucks and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population close to thirty seven thousand and a story harping back to Roman times, when the early A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is linked to the adjacent town of Linslade it is roughly mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it sits next to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has a significant sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's thought that there existed settlements in and close to what is now called Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, historical artifacts and coinage found nearby give evidence of this. The olden Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now termed the A5, went through the close by areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe over two thousand in years past, and the Romans would have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who were using a market sometime in the tenth century, and relics stumbled on mean that they were settling the vicinity possibly from the 6th Century. The settlement existing then wasn't described until 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 named Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, covered a lot bigger area compared to the town by itself, and contained the hamlets of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not to be inserted till the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from another "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to numerous tenants through the ages, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even bigger throughout the succeeding decades and the construction of a railway line and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and evolve. Present day Leighton Buzzard is a flourishing market town that's seen accelerated development in the past few years.
