Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard lays right on the border between Beds and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population close to 37,000 and a story going back to the Roman era, at which time the historic Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is more or less joined to the nearby town of Linslade it is about midway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton (Beds), it is situated next to the Chilterns and has an important quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is thought that there were settlements in and close to what is now called Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, historic artefacts and coins picked up in close proximity give proof of this. The olden Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now named the A5, ran through the close by towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe around about two thousand years ago, and the Romans would have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who were using a market during the tenth century, and artifacts found imply that they were inhabiting the vicinity quite possibly since the 6th Century. The settlement existing at that time was not described until 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book talked about Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, encompassed a significantly larger area compared to the town by itself, and included the hamlets of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to been taken from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not to be put in till the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" that was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to several tenants over the generations, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even bigger through the coming decades and the development of a railway service and a canal in the 19th Century saw the town develop and expand. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard can be termed a prosperous market town that's witnessed accelerated development in the past few years.
