Located in the county of Beds, the small town of Leighton Buzzard sits close to the county border between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a populace of approximately 37,000 and a story stretching back to the Roman period, when the historic Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's thought that there were settlements in and close to what's now named Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, ancient artifacts and coinage found nearby show evidence of this. The ancient Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through the neighbouring areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe roughly 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans would have at the very least been aware of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was them who were using the market place during the 10th Century, and artifacts uncovered suggest that they were living in the neighbourhood perhaps from the 6th Century. The settlement as it was is not documented till 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book specified Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, covered a substantially larger area than just the town by itself, and covered the hamlets of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name seems to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion did not get inserted until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from another "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a great many tenants over the ages, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).
