Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Positioned in the county of Beds in the East of England, the market town of Leighton Buzzard lays very near to the county boundary betwixt Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a populace of about thirty seven thousand and a history harping back to Roman times, when the ancient A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is pretty much connected to the nearby town of Linslade and it's about mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it is located near to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a significant sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's believed that there existed settlements in and near to what's now named Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, age-old relics and coins discovered in close proximity show evidence of this. The historic Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through the neighbouring areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe roughly 2,000 years ago, and the Romans should have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who used the market place in around the tenth century, and relics found show that they were residing in the region more than likely from the sixth century. The settlement as it was isn't mentioned till 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 reported Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, covered a far larger area than merely the town alone, and covered the hamlets of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wouldn't be added till the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to many different tenants over the years, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on growing throughout the ensuing decades and the building of a railway and a canal in the 19th Century saw the town develop and develop. Modern Leighton Buzzard is a booming market town which has seen improved development in the last few years.
