Positioned within the county of Beds in the East of England, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard sits near the county boundary betwixt Bucks and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population close to thirty seven thousand and a history going back to Roman times, when the ancient Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's considered that there had been settlements in and near to what is now called Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, ancient artifacts and coins uncovered nearby show evidence of this fact. The early Watling Street (built by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through neighbouring Hockliffe and Dunstable approximately 2,000 years ago, and the Romans will have at least known of the village at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was them who set up a market sometime in the 10th Century, and artefacts unearthed suggest that they were inhabiting the local area very likely since the sixth century. The settlement existing then is not documented until 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book mentioned Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, encompassed a substantially larger area than just the town itself, and comprised the hamlets of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not put on until the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to several tenants through the years, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).
