Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard lies near to the county border betwixt Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a historic past extending back to the Roman period, when the historic A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the nearby town of Linslade and it's approximately halfway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it stands close to the Chilterns and has an important sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's considered that there existed settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, age-old artefacts and coinage discovered nearby give proof of this fact. The ancient Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through the close by areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable around about two thousand in years past, and the Romans will have at least known of the village at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who were using a market in about the tenth century, and artifacts stumbled upon show that they were inhabiting the local area probably since the sixth century. The commune existing then is not cited till 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 outlined Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, encompassed a way greater area than simply the town alone, and integrated the hamlets of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part wasn't applied until the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln found it vital to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to a number of tenants over the eras, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on expanding over the coming decades and the establishing of of a canal and a railway line during the 19th Century saw it develop and expand. Current day Leighton Buzzard is a thriving market town which has witnessed accelerated development in current times.
