Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Situated within the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the bustling town of Leighton Buzzard lies near the boundary betwixt Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of around thirty seven thousand and a history stretching back to Roman days, when the early Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is attached to the nearby town of Linslade and it is roughly halfway between Luton (Bedfordshire) and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it can be found near the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has an important quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It's considered that there were settlements in and close to what's now named Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, historical artifacts and coins stumbled on nearby show proof of this fact. The ancient Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now called the A5, ran through the nearby areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable around two thousand years ago, and the Romans should have at the very least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who used a market in about the tenth century, and artefacts unearthed show that they were settling the local area more than likely from the sixth century. The village existing at this time was not cited till 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 identified Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, embraced a substantially larger area compared to the town itself, and included the settlements of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to been taken from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece was not included until the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a number of tenants over the eras, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on growing over the following years and the construction of a railway and a canal during the 19th Century saw it expand and develop. Today's Leighton Buzzard can be termed a blooming market town which has seen increased development in current times.
