The age-old Watling Street (established by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through the nearby settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe some 2,000 years back, and the Romans would have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was they who were using a market during the tenth century, and artifacts stumbled upon suggest that they were settling the local area perhaps from the 6th Century. The village as it was is not cited until 906 at which time the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) talked about Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, embraced a much greater area than only the town alone, and included the hamlets of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name may well have been taken from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece wasn't included before the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln found it crucial to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to numerous tenants through the eras, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even bigger during the following decades and the coming of a railway line and a canal in the 19th Century saw it develop and expand. Present day Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a successful market town that has witnessed greater development in the recent past.
