Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Situated within the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard sits right on the county border betwixt Bucks and Beds, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a populace of approximately thirty seven thousand and a history stretching back to Roman days, at which time the early A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is linked to the adjoining town of Linslade and it's approximately halfway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton (Beds), it sits near the Chiltern Hills and has an important quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's thought that there were settlements in and near to what is now named Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, historic artefacts and coinage unearthed nearby give evidence of this fact. The olden Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now called the A5, ran through the neighbouring areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable approximately 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans would have at least known of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who set up the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and relics found show that they were residing in the neighbourhood probably since the sixth century. The commune as such isn't remarked upon until 906 at which time the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) specified Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, encompassed a way wider area than only the town alone, and integrated the settlements of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the town's name could have originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece was not applied prior to the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to many different tenants through the ages, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on expanding during the following generations and the construction of a canal and a railway line in the 19th Century saw it develop and evolve. Modern Leighton Buzzard is a successful market town that has witnessed increased development in modern times.
