Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Beds, the small town of Leighton Buzzard sits close to the border between Bucks and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of about 37,000 and a story going back to Roman days, at which time the historical A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is connected to the neighbouring town of Linslade and is approximately midway between Luton (Beds) and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it lays near to the Chilterns and has a significant sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is believed that there were settlements in and near to what's now called Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, early artifacts and coins uncovered in close proximity offer proof of this. The early Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now termed the A5, cut through the close by areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe about 2,000 in years past, and the Romans should have at the very least been aware of the village as they passed it.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who created the market place in about the 10th Century, and antiquities stumbled on show that they were inhabiting the neighbourhood quite likely since the sixth century. The commune as it was isn't reported till 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book documented Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, covered a considerably larger area compared to the town itself, and covered the hamlets of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion wasn't added on up until the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln found it essential to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to many different tenants through the eras, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).
