Leighton Buzzard History: It is thought that there had been settlements in and close to what's now called Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, historical relics and coins picked up near by show evidence of this. The historical Watling Street (built by the Romans), now called the A5, came through the neighbouring settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe around 2,000 years ago, and the Romans should have at least been aware of the village as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was Saxons who created a market during the tenth century, and relics stumbled upon suggest that they were residing in the locale undoubtedly since the sixth century. The settlement existing at that time isn't described till 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 talked about Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, incorporated a far greater area compared to the town itself, and included the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece wasn't put on up until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from another "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to a number of tenants through the generations, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on expanding throughout the coming decades and the appearance of a railway line and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw the town grow and develop.
