Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard sits very close to the boundary between Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of about thirty seven thousand and a heritage extending back to the times of the Romans, at which time the Roman built Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is linked to the adjacent town of Linslade and it is roughly mid-way between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton (Bedfordshire), it stands near to the Chiltern Hills and has an important sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is thought that there existed settlements in and close to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, early artefacts and coins uncovered in close proximity give evidence of this fact. The historical Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through the close by areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe over 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans should have at the very least been aware of the village at that time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who were using the market place in about the tenth century, and artefacts unearthed show that they were settling the vicinity more than likely from the sixth century. The settlement existing at this time wasn't discussed till 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 outlined Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, covered a lot greater area than merely the town itself, and incorporated the hamlets of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion was not to be included till the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln found it desirable to differentiate it from another "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to several tenants over the years, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even bigger through the succeeding generations and the coming of a canal and a railway line during the Nineteenth Century saw the town expand and develop. Modern Leighton Buzzard is a prospering market town that has witnessed accelerated development in current times.
