Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard is right on the county boundary between Bedfordshire and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of about thirty seven thousand and a past going back to Roman times, when the historic Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is attached to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it's approximately midway between Luton (Bedfordshire) and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it is found next to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's considered that there had been settlements in and near to what is now named Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, historical artifacts and coins found in close proximity give evidence of this fact. The historical Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through close by Hockliffe and Dunstable roughly two thousand years back, and the Romans will have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was them who set up the market place in about the 10th Century, and artefacts stumbled on mean that they were settling the region perhaps from the sixth century. The village as it was was not cited until 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) listed Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, encompassed a lot bigger area than just the town by itself, and comprised the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece wouldn't be inserted until the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln found it crucial to distinguish it from another "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to numerous tenants over the centuries, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on expanding during the succeeding years and the appearance of a canal and a railway line during the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and grow.
