Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Situated within the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard sits near to the county boundary between Beds and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a populace of approximately 37,000 and a past harping back to the Roman period, when the ancient A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is linked to the adjacent town of Linslade and it's approximately halfway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton, it is found close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts a vital quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It's felt that there had been settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, age-old artifacts and coins stumbled on in the area show proof of this fact. The age old Watling Street (established by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through close by Hockliffe and Dunstable about 2,000 years ago, and the Romans would have at least known of the village as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who introduced the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and antiquities stumbled on indicate that they were inhabiting the area very likely since the 6th Century. The village as it was is not listed until 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book recognised Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, incorporated a much bigger area than merely the town itself, and included the hamlets of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name appears to derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component wasn't appended prior to the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to several tenants through the ages, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on growing through the ensuing generations and the coming of a canal and a railway service during the 19th Century saw the town develop and expand. Modern Leighton Buzzard can be described as a flourishing market town that has witnessed accelerated development in recent times.
