Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard sits near the boundary betwixt Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of about thirty seven thousand and a heritage harping back to the era of the Romans, at which time the historic Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is more or less connected to the nearby town of Linslade and is about halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it lies very close to the Chiltern Hills and has a vital quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's felt that there existed settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, historical artifacts and coins uncovered nearby show evidence of this fact. The age-old Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now known as the A5, cut through the neighbouring towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable around 2,000 years back, and the Romans would have at the very least been aware of Leighton Buzzard at this time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who set up the market place sometime in the tenth century, and artefacts unearthed suggest that they were settling the local area perhaps from the 6th Century. The settlement as it was then wasn't described till 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 recognized Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, incorporated a much wider area than just the town itself, and comprised the hamlets of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name appears to been taken from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section did not get included up until the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to many different tenants through the years, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even larger over the ensuing generations and the coming of a canal and a railway during the 19th Century saw it expand and develop. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard can be termed a thriving market town which has seen greater development in the past few years.
