Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Situated within the county of Beds in the East of England, the town of Leighton Buzzard is close to the boundary betwixt Beds and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of around thirty seven thousand and a story going back to Roman days, at which time the ancient A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is more or less connected to the adjoining town of Linslade and is about halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it lays next to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts an important sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It is felt that there existed settlements in and close to what is now named Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, historical artefacts and coinage uncovered near by show proof of this fact. The historic Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through nearby Dunstable and Hockliffe roughly 2,000 years ago, and the Romans will have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was them who used the market place during the tenth century, and artefacts uncovered reveal that they were residing in the area quite possibly from the 6th Century. The commune as it was then isn't cited until 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book named Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, embodied a substantially wider area than only the town alone, and covered the hamlets of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part wasn't added up until the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from another "Leighton" which he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to various tenants over the centuries, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on growing throughout the following generations and the coming of a canal and a railway line in the 19th Century saw the town develop and develop. Modern Leighton Buzzard is a busy market town that has seen increased development in recent times.
