Found in the county of Beds in the East of England, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard stands very close to the boundary between Bucks and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a populace of about 37,000 and a past going back to Roman days, at which time the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's thought that there had been settlements in and close to what is now named Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, historic relics and coinage found nearby offer proof of this. The olden Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now known as the A5, ran through the nearby towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe approximately 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans will have at the very least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who set up a market in about the tenth century, and relics found mean that they were inhabiting the vicinity in all likelihood since the 6th Century. The commune as such is not discussed till 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) mentioned Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, incorporated a way wider area than simply the town by itself, and consisted of the settlements of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component did not get applied till the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" which he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a number of tenants through the generations, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on growing throughout the ensuing years and the construction of a canal and a railway line in the 19th Century saw it expand and develop. Modern day Leighton Buzzard is a thriving market town which has witnessed greater development in the past several years.
