Positioned within the county of Bedfordshire, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard lies very near to the county border betwixt Beds and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population close to thirty seven thousand and a heritage going back to the times of the Romans, when the ancient Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is connected to the nearby town of Linslade it is about midway between Luton (Beds) and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it is placed close to the Chilterns and has a substantial sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It is believed that there existed settlements in and close to what is now named Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, historical artefacts and coinage found in close proximity offer evidence of this. The olden Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through the nearby towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable over two thousand years back, and the Romans should have at least been aware of the village at that time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who set up a market sometime in the 10th Century, and antiquities unearthed show that they were residing in the locale very likely since the 6th Century. The settlement existing at that time is not described until 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book recognised Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, incorporated a considerably larger area compared to the town by itself, and incorporated the settlements of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion was not added till the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to several tenants over the eras, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even larger over the coming years and the building of a railway and a canal in the 19th Century saw the town develop and evolve. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard is a booming market town which has seen greater development in the past several years.
